Ballet Kelowna makes it to the cover of Okanagan Life's Best of the Okanagan issue November 2009 ... and what a thrill it is for us!
We were given an Editors' Choice for 'Best Dancers on Tippy-Toes". Here is what Associate Editor Karen Slivar had to say about us: "I was taken aback by the ballet performance I saw this fall ... when Ballet Kelowna's dance troupe took to the stage I was immediately struck by their grace and energy."
Read the article on the Editors' Choices here (there is also a great feature on Candesca) and check out the fabulous cover here. Big thank yous to Glenna Turnbull for her awesome photographs - she really captures the dancers so beautifully. Check out Okanagan Life and the full issue at OkanaganLife.com.
Classic Contrast is a hit with our audiences! See what our viewers are saying:
"Just wanted to thank you for the beautiful performance especially Le Banc - I cried, it was so beautiful." Gail Hourigan, Kelowna
"I saw the show in Vernon tonight...it was truly brilliant. In Arden Woods was an audio/visual feast; Le Banc was light-hearted and moving; and Indigo Mood was absolutely riveting. I got the sense that the dancers were REALLY enjoying themselves when they were pushing the boundaries of innovative choreography. Lots of so-called 'modern dance' that I've seen before lacked the energy and athletics of what I saw tonight. Congratulations on bold moves that will win new young audiences." Sari Cox, Vernon
Ballet Kelowna was thrilled to have noted dance critic Paula Citron (bio below) review our performance in Penticton this spring. What an amazing honour and experience for Ballet Kelowna. Ms. Citron acknowledged Ballet Kelowna's strength in touring and commission new works by Canadian choreographers:
"Ballet Kelowna commissions works from well-known Canadian choreographers. The premiere this season is by Toronto's D.A. Hoskins, who has taken Ralph Vaughn Williams's famous tone poem The Lark Ascending as a metaphor for private reverie that borders on narcissism. The on-point women add to ethereal nature of the piece.
Montreal's Gioconda Barbuto has given the company a fluid, supple work in Negotiating Shifts (2008) set to the relentless repeating rhythms of Philip Glass. Her choreography is the representation of the compromises necessary to carry on living as shown through the abrupt collisions within human encounters. The off-point piece sports a taut energy and unpredictable movement that catches the eye.
In the final analysis, Ballet Kelowna certainly deserves an encouragement award for bringing dance to smaller communities, and for commissioning pieces from the likes of Hoskins and Barbuto that challenge the audience."
