Vividus | Full of Life

May 2 + 3, 2025 / 7:30 PM / Kelowna Community Theatre

The 2024/25 season culminates with Vividus, a dynamic triple bill featuring some of Canada’s finest choreographers. With Simone Orlando’s spirited Rite of Spring and Lesley Telford’s gripping An Instant, this high-energy program is complemented by a breathtaking world premiere by Guillaume Côté.

Rite of Spring
Choreography
: Simone Orlando
Music: Igor Stravinsky, Rite of Spring
Lighting Design: Rylee Block

A visceral reaction to Igor Stravinsky’s avant-garde composition of the same name, Simone Orlando’s Rite of Spring is a commentary on self-sacrifice. This intellectual work depicts a woman’s journey as she rejects fate and chooses to pursue her own destiny of love and life in the face of a cruel and chaotic world. Bursting with fractious energy, nine dancers rebel against the status quo and hope ultimately prevails.

An Instant
Choreography
: Lesley Telford
Music: Michael Gordon, Weather One

The distinct language of Vancouver-based choreographer Lesley Telford comes to Ballet Kelowna for the first time in An Instant, a work that investigates physical risk and captures the feeling of teetering on the edge of a precipice. Originally created for Ballet BC, Telford’s adrenaline-fueled movement employs an exhilarating counterbalance of tension and release, further amplified by American composer Michael Gordon’s suspenseful score, Weather One.

World Premiere
New Work by Guillaume Côté

: Guillaume Côté

A world-renowned dance artist and sought-after choreographer, Guillaume Côté has been described as “one of the finest male dancers in the world” by The Times. Additionally, he is the current Artistic Director of Le Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur, the largest summer dance festival in the country. Having recently choreographed Hamlet, Prince of Denmark in partnership with Canadian director Robert Lepage, Côté will continue to test the limits of contemporary ballet in his first commissioned work by Ballet Kelowna.
